Global Training Program - GTP

Geneva for Human Rights - Global Training

'All the rights for all'

Board of Trustees : Gustavo GALLON (Colombia), José RAMOS HORTA (East Timor). Head of Programme : Adrien-Claude ZOLLER (Switzerland).

Based on twenty years training experience of its Head, the ‘Global Training Programme’ offers a unique expertise in teaching intergovernmental organisations and international human rights procedures.

The courses realized under this Programme combine theoretical knowledge in international relations and public international law with an insight into the actual practice of intergovernmental sessions and conferences and their procedures.

PRE 'Participation of the REgions'

Participation of the Regions in the Human Rights Council - A training program for an effective participation of defenders from the regions in the work of the Human Rights Council’ (PRE).

This program is comprised of Courses in Geneva for each ordinary session of the Council and In-Country Courses in-between the Council’s sessions (on the Council proceedings and procedures, implementation in the countries, new NGOs strategies). The coordinator of this programme is Adrien-Claude Zoller.

GSC 'Geneva Courses'

Training Course for defenders from the regions ‘on the Human Rights Council, international human rights and humanitarian law, international procedures and diplomacy’

The Geneva Courses are unique. They combine theory, experiences of NGOs in the field and the exposure to international (human rights) diplomacy. GHR already realized its Geneva Courses during the sessions of the Commission on Human Rights.

GSS 'Geneva Seminars'

GHR evaluated this program last year. It stated a need to adapt the format of these Seminars to the capacities of the NGOs from the countries concerned. A main feature is that they stay in Geneva only for the days of review of their countries, and not for the two-week session. This is why this training activity will take the form of orientation and briefings for NGOs from the regions, with separate lectures on the UN procedures for those who need it. GHR intends to prepare it with Geneva-based NGOs from the South. It envisages similar initiatives for some sessions of the treaty bodies.

ICT 'In Countries Training'

These (3 to 4 days) Courses cover the analysis of the local situation, developments in the UN and in the Council, the special procedures, the UPR, the treaty bodies, the national implementation process and the strategies (including the protection of defenders).

GHR has already conducted 34 In-Country Courses, always together with local partners and most of the time with former trainees in the Geneva Courses contributing as resource persons. Selection of participants is the responsibility of the partners.

Most recent Courses took place in the Russian Federation, Indonesia (West-Papua), Pakistan, Nepal, India, Sri-Lanka, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras.

INP 'Implementation Now'

‘Strengthening national empowerment to facilitate the implementation of human rights at national level’.

The programme’s main objective is, through training, mediation, advisory services and teaching strategies, to contribute to the national implementation process.

Main aim of this Programme is to contribute to the national implementation process in one particular country through training, mediation, advisory services and teaching strategies. In 2007, GHR first country programme (Mexico) was evaluated in order to develop a similar action in other countries. GHR activities started in Colombia, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

TSS 'Training for Specific Stakeholders'

Under this programme, GHR remains at the disposal of its main partners, either to conduct joint training Courses at their request, or to provide trainers for one part of their Seminars. GHR recently contributed to Seminars of the World Council of Churches, the German NGO Forum and the F. Ebert Stiftung, Forum Asia (Bangkok), Ecole Instrument de Paix, the German Network on Papua.
