Our Vision & Our Objectives

Geneva for Human Rights - Global Training

Since 1948, the international community adopted numerous human rights declarations and conventions ('international instruments') and created dozens of procedures to monitor the implementation of these new standards.

Obviously, there is a need for additional conventions, and control mechanisms should be further strengthened. However, it is also time to move on to the next step.

It is time for implementation: victims, witnesses, human rights organisations and defenders working in the field under difficult conditions, all are demanding implementation without further delay of these international standards.

The international community does not substitute itself to the State: human rights have to be implemented by the country itself.

Each State has to elaborate its own public policies, obviously in association with all sectors of the society.

The indispensable tools to facilitate such a process are: elaborating and using domestic and international standards and mechanisms; technical assistance programmes; strengthening the human rights movement; supporting national institutions; promoting the cooperation between the State and all sectors of the society; and elaborating and implementing national plans.

Thus, implementation in the countries implies developing national capacities.

As a training organization, Geneva for Human Rights – Global Training (GHR) strives to :

  • contribute to this effort of capacity building;
  • support those in the regions, in particular human rights organisations and defenders, whom it wants to empower.

GDH convened diplomats and experts for a brainstorming on the future of the Human Rights Council.

On the occasion of the General Assembly 2011 of Geneva for Human Rights, our Executive Council convened diplomats and experts for a:

'Brainstorming Session on the future of the Human Rights Council'

Massive human rights violations persist around the world. There are still gaps between the United Nations (UN) standards and the realities in the field.

GHR is a training organisation contributing to the implementation of human rights standards adopted by UN, and which States committed to respect, and of UN decisions. It wants to bridge these gaps.

Through training, study and protection, GHR aims at strengthening and empowering organisations and defenders and all those in the field involved in the promotion and protection of human rights.

Its ‘Global Training Department’ (GTP) realizes each year dozens of Courses and Seminars in Geneva and in the regions.

The HPS Department analyzes UN human rights meetings and is a necessary tool to prepare training activities.
